Our Educational Services System (ESS) serves Alaska Native and Native American participants of all ages, including out of school and in-school youth. Our academic programs strive to enhance students’ academic accomplishments, personal development and career potential. We utilize culturally relevant curricula and teaching techniques that focus on individual student needs. We utilize the ASSETS* model when working with all our participants. Our career preparation and workforce development programs help youth with educational and employment barriers to attain their goals and achieve success in life. We strive to help youth stay in school, earn their diploma or GED and improve their academic skills. This is accomplished by coordinating apprenticeships, supporting postsecondary education, providing work experience and preparing youth for permanent employment.
ESS provides comprehensive services to all participants, including extensive referral and advocacy services and personalized follow-up. ESS also offers a number of cultural enrichment programs for youth. These programs work to provide youth with activities that increase their cultural self-identify and pride. The Leaders of Tomorrow is an advisory group of youth dedicated to making positive changes in the community. They participate in the annual Global Youth Service Day event and other community service projects.
*ASSETS – the key building blocks in children’s lives that help them grow up strong, capable and caring. Assets promote health behaviors and protect against unhealthy behaviors. Asset building is successful because of the positive relationships that are built between caring adults and youth. Our ESS Department cares about youth, and wants them to be successful and empowered to create and achieve their dreams.
