Hospitality and Tourism 

Career Institute

The Hospitality and Tourism Career Institute (HTCI) was established to serve Alaska Natives and American Indians 18 years and older. Opportunities are available to individuals who are new to the hospitality and tourism industry and to those already working within the tourism industry who are seeking to upgrade their skills.

AlaskaAccording to the Department of CommerceCommunity, and Economic Development, tourism activity in Alaska
makes the hospitality and tourism industry the state’s fourth largest employer. Certification in the tourism industry will create a quality experience, not only for the visitor, but for the employer and employee too.  Participants will not only improve their skills in a new and promising career, but also enhance local communities and businesses statewide by becoming quality, professional employees.

TRAINING OFFERED BY HTCI

Alaska Host/Cultural Host: Alaska Host teaches customer service excellence within the Alaskan tourist industry, and Cultural Host offers training for awareness and knowledge of the indigenous people of Alaska and how to share that information with Alaska visitors.

Hotel Front Desk ("Going the Extra Mile")/Cultural Host: Technical training in reservations, check-in, check-out, and providing excellent guest service. This is taught with a Cultural Host class with a job shadow on the third day at a local hotel.

Entrepreneurship/Alaska Host: Learn the basics on how to start and run your own business, and recognize the importance of customers to your business.

Culinary Arts/ServSafe: This internship includes three weeks of on-the-job training, four hours daily. Learn important skills like kitchen orientation and management, sanitation, safety, menu planning, and food preparation, all in a commercial kitchen. Students also attend training and testing for a food safety certification. Enrollment is continuous.

Alaska Host/Barista: Customer service and communication skills coupled with a four-hour Barista training through Kaladi Brothers Coffee. A job shadow at a local coffee shop is available.  Classes are scheduled as needed.

Warranty of Employability: This three-week certification covers many of the previously listed trainings as well as certificates from Kaladi Brothers Coffee Academy or Cafe D'Arte Academy, ServSafe, Alaska Host, Destination Specialist, and Hotel Front Desk. Graduates earn a certificate from HTCI endorsing their eligibility for employment within the hospitality and tourism industry. Because of the serious commitment level of this three-week, intensive training, participants demonstrate to employers that as HTCI graduates they have the skills necessary to maintain the industry's highest workforce standards.
